South Central Indiana's natural environment and commitment to supporting the agricultural industry make this region an ideal location for agricultural business opportunities. Indiana is a leader in the production of corn and soybeans and actively promotes the use of biofuels including ethanol and blended biofuels derived from corn and soybeans. Agriculture in Indiana is a large and diverse industry with 65,000 farms containing 15.5 million acres of farmland. In 1999, Indiana ranked 15th in the U.S. in cash receipts from the sale of all commodities; crop sales amounted to $2.7 billion dollars (10th in the nation) and livestock sales amounted to $1.5 billion dollars (23rd in the nation). In 1998, farmers had cash receipts from the sale of all commodities (crops and livestock) totaling $4.883 billion dollars.
